How to Buy an Auto Repair Business or Franchise Opportunity

One thing is for certain, as long as there are cars, there is going to be a need for auto repair shops. You can find an auto repair shop as a business for sale or a franchise opportunity. But what do you need to know before buying a business like this and what should you know before establishing operations?

When you find an auto repair business for sale or an auto repair franchise opportunity, understand that this is not an easy business. You may have been a mechanic all your life or maybe you know nothing about the business. However even if you worked in the field for many years, owning and managing is an entirely different story. This is a business where on any given day you could have several automobiles to service. Since people need their cars, you can bet that they will be calling the shop all day for an update on their auto repair status.

There is a difference between the auto repair shop that is in front of someone's driveway (a home operation) and an auto repair business with a fully-equipped repair bay. If you want to do any sort of serious business you will need to make sure the repair bays have working racks and other tools that are critical to getting a car in, getting the job done right, and getting it back to the customer - quickly and efficiently.

In order to handle any significant volume, you will more than likely need to hire other mechanics. You will not be able to handle the management of the shop plus work on automobiles. Hire only certified mechanics and make sure you take the time to verify their certifications. You should also consider training programs for your mechanics to keep up-to-date on new automobile technology.

If you are buying an existing auto repair shop then it will have a loyal customer base. You should check that the business you buy has a good reputation and the key employees are happy and willing to stay with the new business owner. Make sure the auto repair franchise for sale or business for sale is in a good high traffic and highly visible location. If the shop is in an area that is rather upscale, you may not do much business as most people can likely afford to take their cars to dealerships. Auto repair shops in areas where most people have older vehicles could possibly do quite well.

Do the repairs right and build trust with your customers and they will return vehicles to you for repairs for generations.
