Hi guys, So I'm sure that everyone here is aware of just how much opportunity there is to market yourself and your business online. You probably already have a website. If not, go and get one. Trying to to compete in your industry without having web presence in the form of at least a website is like trying to fight Mike Tyson with both your hands tied behind your back. You don't have to spend a lot of money on a website, it just has to look professional. It doesn't have to have all the fancy bells and whistle you probably think you need. Ok, so now you have a website, what's next? Well, we've got to make sure that someone actually finds it. A website is not very good if you've got no one visiting it. So, of course, put your site's address on ALL of your printed materials. Business cards, brochures, direct mail. Most customers WILL go online to research your company or your product before they end up purchasing it. This is why being online is so important. What we need to do now, is to go out into the online world, and to establish you as the authority in your field. The end goal will be to ensure that ytou can be found on Google or any other search engine for the keywords that you are targeting, and for those that your customers are searching for. For example, if you are an athletic shoe retailer in Boston, the when people go into a search engine and type in, "Nike Shoes Boston" you probably have what they are looking for. A great exercise for you to do, is to sit for a couple of minutes and brainstorm all of the different keywords(phrases) that your potential customers would input into the search engine. Put yourself in their shoes and think of what you would search for if you were them. Now that we have the keywords, you need to establish yourself as the authority for those keywords. There are many different elements to this, but you definitely want to include those keywords on your site's pages and text. If someone is searching for sports shoes in Boston, and no where on your page do you have the words "sports", "shoes", or "Boston" then the search engines will think your site is not related to those terms and will NOT show it to their searchers. Besides having your keywords on your sites pages, one of the most important attributes to how a site ranks in search engines, is links pointing to it. Search engines view links like votes in a popularity contest. The more links a site has pointing to it, the more people must like it, and the more helpful it probably is. Since the goal of search engines is to present the most useful results, they will rank sites that have a lot of links pointing to them higher than those with fewer links. So how do you get links? Links come from providing VALUE and CONTENT. One of the best ways is to write articles about your topic and to submit them to article directories around the web. At the end of your articles you can include one or two links back to your website. Another way can come from leaving your links on any website profiles you have. Place like facebook allow you to add your link when you sign up. Another way is if you are a blog reader, many blog owners allow people to comment on their blogs, and even allow them to leave a link to their website. Link exchanges are another way, where you have to find sites that are relevant to your business, and ask them to exchange links. (They post a link to you, and you post a link to them.) Link building IS time consuming, but it's also FREE when you follow the steps above! There is NO cost to any of those methods, except your effort and your time. Believe me, the traffic of new customers that you will be seeing to your website will make it all worth it! You won't believe how many people are searching for products or services that YOU HAVE, but are not finding your website because you haven't taken the time to make your site easy to find. There are hundreds of people from your local area per day who use the search engines to find the same product or service that you have. Wouldn't it be nice to even get 20 or 30 of those hundreds to visit your site? This is 20-30 leads EACH DAY! Now, you can't say that you can't devote an hour or two each day to bring in 20-30 new leads per day... PS. It's important that you are consistent with link building. It's not a one day sort of thing where you do it and you're done. The search engines have to see that you are getting new links each month, or else they will think you are losing popularity...
