I have a unique web-based business that I'm thinking about selling, but I'm not sure what it's worth or how to go about selling it. The business is a value-added reseller which sells data to other businesses. I built it myself, from the ground-up. It's about 1 1/2 years old, and in that time the business went from breaking-even money-wise to lately bringing-in about $3,000 profit per month. And it's still growing. There have been over 1200 signups for free trials. 173 of those 1200 people have added money to their pre-paid accounts to become members. Of those 99 of them are currently members. Last month we did 1.1 million individual transactions, which was a record. One thing about the business which I think should be very valuable is that it almost completely runs itself; customers sign-up for free trials, and if they want to become paying customers they make payments via paypal to their pre-paid accounts. There's nothing to ship. When they do transactions, their prepaid balance goes down. There is some occasional maintenence required to the data; but nothing difficult or time consuming. And I get a call from a client approximately every other day. Very rarely are these customer support calls; mostly they are people who want to make sure they undersand how things work before they sign-up. I'm a single parent with a full time job, so I had to make sure the business required as little of my time as possible during the day. I get text messages whenever someone signs-up, makes a payment, uploads a file, sends me an email, etc. And I also have some really nice admin web reports which can be viewed in real-time. I've been reading the forums and it seems there are so many different ways to determine the value of a company, but I kind-of think that using some formula is a bit simplistic; one really has to understand the details for each specific business. I'd really appreciate any advice.
